India has constructed the world's largest office building, surpassing the Pentagon.

The newly opened Surat Diamond Bourse in Gujarat, India, is making headlines as it claims the title of the world’s largest office building, surpassing even the Pentagon in size. This monumental complex, spanning over 7.1 million square feet of floor space, serves as a centralized hub for the global diamond industry, accommodating over 65,000 diamond professionals.

Designed by Indian architecture firm Morphogenesis, the Surat Diamond Bourse features a unique layout comprising nine interconnected rectangular structures surrounding a central spine. This design not only provides convenient access to amenities and facilities but also fosters a “level playing field” for businesses of all sizes, creating a democratic workspace environment. The building’s construction, spanning four years with some delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has now been completed, and it is set to welcome its first occupants in November.

The project, which cost approximately $388 million, boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including over 4,700 office spaces, dining, retail, wellness, and conference facilities. One of the key aspects of the building’s design is its emphasis on sustainability and energy efficiency. Morphogenesis claims that the design consumes significantly less energy than the maximum permitted, earning it a “platinum” rating from the Indian Green Building Council. Natural ventilation systems, radiant cooling technology, and solar energy utilization are among the eco-friendly features incorporated into the building’s design. Moreover, the Surat Diamond Bourse is expected to play a pivotal role in the future development of Surat, serving as an anchor tenant for the city’s ambitious “Dream City” project. This project aims to transform Surat into a smart city, encompassing almost 700 hectares of land and featuring sustainable design principles.

Overall, the Surat Diamond Bourse stands as a testament to India’s growing prominence in the global diamond industry and its commitment to sustainable development. With its record-breaking size, innovative design, and eco-friendly features, it marks a significant milestone in the country’s architectural landscape.
