A group of foreign students studying at Gujarat University faced an attack by a mob on Saturday evening while they were offering namaz at their hostel. The incident occurred in Block A of the university campus, where around 75 international students reside. Allegedly, 20-25 people entered the hostel premises and objected to the students' prayer, leading to a confrontation and physical assault.
The students, hailing from Africa, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and other countries, were reportedly targeted for offering namaz in their hostel instead of a mosque. The situation escalated when the mob hurled stones and vandalized the hostel premises, causing damage to property and injuring some students. Videos of the incident, including acts of vandalism and stone pelting, circulated on social media, sparking outrage.
Despite claims by the Gujarat University vice chancellor of a "clash" between two groups, the incident has raised concerns about religious intolerance and safety for foreign students. The police registered an FIR against the suspects and assured them they would be arrested soon. The Ministry of External Affairs has also taken note of the matter and is coordinating with the state government to address the issue.
The incident highlights the importance of promoting tolerance and ensuring the safety of all students, regardless of their nationality or religion, within educational institutions.
